If you are looking for fun ways to incorporate math into your school day in fun and easy ways, check out this list of 5 math routine ideas below! It gets students practicing math skills throughout the school day without them even realizing it! Read all about these fun math routine ideas below!

5 Math Routine Ideas

Below are 5 math routine ideas for elementary teachers.

1. Count During Transitions

The first math routine idea on this list is to count during transitions. Think about what is appropriate for your grade level and the time of year. For example, first graders might count up from 78 to 100. Third graders, on the other hand, might count by multiples of 11 to 99.

2. Count When Cleaning Up

The second math routine idea is to count when cleaning up. Again, think about what is appropriate for your grade level and the time of year. Second graders might skip count by 5’s to 110. Fourth graders, on the other hand, might divide by 2’s starting with the number 2,048.

3. Invite Students to Use a Timer

When students are working in centers, invite them to set a timer or use a sand timer as part of their routine. The primary grades could benefit from a visual timer or sand timer instead of a standard timer. This math routine isn’t only helpful for students for knowing how much time they have remaining at each center and when they need to transition, but also for developing a conceptual understanding of time. For example, they’ll learn what 10 minutes feels like.

4. Post Times on Your Visual Schedule

Posting a visual representation (analog or digital depending on your grade level) for the starting time of each content area on your schedule will help bring and reinforce meaning to time. It’s an important component of your visual classroom schedule display. I include a set of schedule time cards in all of my classroom theme bundles, as well as part of a generic schedule cards set.

5. Assign Student Numbers

The last math routine on this list is to assign student numbers to your students. One way to utilize this system is to call students to line up based on number categories (e.g. even numbers, 2 tens, and multiples of 5).

In closing, we hope you found this post about fun math routine ideas helpful! If you did, then you may also be interested in these posts:

When I decided to implement Guided Math Workshop in my classroom, I knew I wanted a math rotation board with a catchy acronym. I landed on M.A.T.H., which represents the four centers. M stands for “math facts.” A stands for “at your seat.” T represents “teacher’s choice.” H is “hands on.” This M.A.T.H. acronym has now spread around the country.

In this blog post, we’ll talk about the Math Workshop with Guided Math rotation board and a little bit about how to use it, but I go much deeper into detail in my Guided Math Workshop course (coming soon) and Guided Math Workshop guide. If you are looking for more information about the math rotation board and the printables to create it, head over to either of those two resources!

a math workshop rotation board in an elementary classroom

This blog post will answer the following questions:

  • What is a Math Workshop rotation board?
  • What are the key components of a math rotation board?
  • Why is a Math Workshop with Guided Math rotation schedule important?
  • How do I use a Math Workshop with a Guided Math rotation board?

What is a Math Workshop with a Guided Math Rotation Board?

A Math Workshop rotation board, sometimes called a Guided Math rotation board or a math rotation board, is a workboard, chart, or PowerPoint slide that communicates to students where they will be working, what they will be working on, and who they will be working with during Guided Math Workshop.  It is an incredibly powerful management tool that can either be posted on your Math Workshop bulletin board or projected on your board (using a Math Workshop with Guided Math rotation PowerPoint).  I offer both options (printable and digital) in my Guided Math Workshop course (coming soon) and Guided Math Workshop Guide. The math rotation board is one of the many things teachers need for Math Workshop.

guided math workshop station rotation chart

3 Important Components of a Math Rotation Board

Here are the 3 main components of a math rotation board:

1. Math Rotation Grid

The rotation grid informs students where their group will be during each rotation. The group numbers are shown at the top while the rotations are recorded down the left column.

2. Math Station Agendas

The agendas include space to let students know what they will be doing at each of the stations.  You may also want to include standards, objectives, or essential questions. You can use pocket charts, dry erase boards, or simply attach paper.

3. Math Team Information

To inform students which math team they are on and who their partner will be, you’ll need to include an area for displaying the lists. I attached card stock to the board to designate the space where the list of names will go. The card stock is stapled at the corners to hold it in place, but is loose along the top. This allows for a paperclip to attach over the card stock. You can easily change out the lists of names by sliding the lists under the paper clips. When recording the students’ names onto the team list, write each child’s name and their math partner’s name in the same color. This will communicate to them who they will be working with.

rotation chart for guided math workshop

Why is a Math Workshop with Guided Math rotation schedule important?

A Math Workshop with Guided Math rotation schedule is important because it provides structure to the math block and gives students a variety of different opportunities to work on math concepts and skills. Students rotate through the math centers in a consistent way using the schedule, so that your math block basically runs itself over time. The Math Workshop board communicates this schedule to students so they know what tasks they are working on and when. Learn more about math block structures!

3 Steps for How to Use a Math Workshop with Guided Math Rotation Board

These are the 3 steps for using a Math Workshop rotation board:

1. Before Math Workshop

Post the station agendas, groups, and partnerships.

2. During Math Workshop

Go over the rotation board after the mini lesson.  Students will refer to it throughout the math rotations, so make sure it is in a spot where it is accessible to them from all parts of the classroom where they will be looking from.

3. After Math Workshop

Reset the rotation board and prepare it for the following day.

Imagine this… As you sit with your guided math group, you quickly scan your Math Workshop rotations to check to see if students are engaged and on-task. At one of the stations, your students are independently working through and solving problems. You see one of your students look stuck, but then begin to think about what strategies she could use (just like you taught her). Next, she checks her math tool kit and pulls out counters and a tens frame and goes on to confidently solve the problem. Is there anything better than that? Equipping students with the tools they need, having them accessible in their math tool kits, and modeling how to use them appropriately can make this dream a reality!

math manipulatives for an individual student tool kit

This blog post will answer the following questions:

  • What is a math tool kit?
  • Why are math tool kits important?
  • How should I organize and store my students’ math tool kits?
  • What should be in a math tool kit?

What is a Math Tool Kit?

A math tool kit is a collection of helpful printable reference tools and math manipulatives to support students in math.  Each student in your classroom should have their own and be able to access it easily. Math tool kits are an important resource to help your students develop into independent learners. Other common names for a math tool kit are math toolbox and numeracy toolkit

2nd grader using math tool kit

Why are Math Tool Kits Important?

Math tool kits are important because they empower students to select and use appropriate tools to help them solve problems. This skill is part of being a proficient mathematician.

For example, the Common Core’s Standards for Mathematical Practice, also referred to as the math practices, identifies that students need to be able to model with mathematics and use appropriate tools strategically. Modeling with mathematics involves students being able to represent problems using objects, drawings, diagrams, equations, tables, graphs, etc. and use these representations to help them solve problems. Using appropriate tools strategically involves students being able to choose the best tools to help them solve problems. These tools include a pencil and paper, ruler, meter stick, measuring tape, calculator, hundreds chart, coins, base-ten blocks, three-dimensional shapes, tangrams, etc.

Similarly, the TEKS’s Mathematical Process Standards identifies that students must be able to select tools, including real objects, manipulatives, paper and pencil, and technology as appropriate, and techniques, including mental math, estimation, and number sense as appropriate, to solve problems.  Because this is such an integral part of being a mathematician, it is incredibly important for elementary students to begin practicing these very important skills through the use of their own mathematics toolkits.

How Should I Organize and Store my Students’ Math Tool Kits?

Here are 3 things to consider when organizing and storing your students’ math toolkits:

  1. Store them in a place where students can access them independently. For example, you could store them in a crate or on a shelf at a position where students can reach them. Similarly, you could hang them on command hooks on a wall in your classroom. Again, be sure to hang them low enough so students can grab them as they need them. Consider having students store them in their desk if you think that would work for your classroom and group of students.
  2. Label the container holding the tool kits with student numbers instead of their names. This makes it so that they can be used year after year. You could also consider labeling each of the tools inside of it with student numbers to help you and your students return a missing item to the appropriate container.
  3. Consider using a pencil box, large ziploc bag, or a clear plastic bag with a hook to hold and organize the contents of the math tool kit. You could also think about using smaller ziploc bags to organize the manipulatives inside of the larger container. Perhaps you might consider asking for donations from students’ families or adding it to your supply list at the beginning of the school year.
what to put into a math toolkit for students

What Should be in a Math Tool Kit?

The contents of a math tool kit depends on what grade level you teach. Check out this blog post all about math manipulatives to get ideas for which ones make sense for your grade level.

In addition to the list of math manipulatives, consider these printable resources:

  • 100 chart or 120 chart

Creating a classroom environment that equips elementary students with the tools (like math posters) and resources they need to be successful, independent learners is one of the most important jobs we have as teachers. As we design and set up our classrooms for the new school year, we need to brainstorm how we can create both a numeracy-rich and literacy-rich classroom.

colorful assortment of math tools and supplies

Literacy and math should be equally represented in your space. For example, if your classroom has an abundance of reference charts and tools for literacy, but only has a few math posters tacked up in the corner, you may want to consider looking at your classroom with a math lens to ensure you are fully supporting your students.

Each display, bulletin board, and area in the classroom needs to be thoughtfully planned out with students’ needs in mind. In addition, it’s important that we make tools (like elementary math posters, math tool kits, number lines and a math word wall) accessible to students.

If you are thinking, “I don’t even know what a numeracy-rich environment is! Where do I begin?” No worries! You’re in the right place!

What is a Numeracy-Rich Environment?

A numeracy-rich environment, also commonly referred to as a math-rich environment, is a space that promotes and supports mathematical thinking and processes. Similar to how a literacy-rich environment surrounds students with written words in a natural way, a numeracy-rich environment surrounds students with numbers, mathematical concepts, math tools and manipulatives, and math vocabulary.

Numeracy-Rich Environment vs Literacy-Rich Environment

A numeracy-rich environment is focused on math, while a literacy-rich environment is focused on reading and writing. Both are centered on the idea that it is important to create spaces that promote and support learning.

student using classroom calendar

Why is a Numeracy-Rich Classroom Environment Important?

A numeracy-rich classroom environment is important because it equips students with the tools and resources they need as problem solvers and math thinkers. By being immersed in an environment that fosters a positive mindset surrounding math, students become unafraid of making mistakes and taking risks, which is essential in this content area. This translates into a higher level of confidence in math abilities and higher levels of performance.

teacher in a small group for guided math

10 Easy Ways to Create a Math-Rich Environment

1. Whole Group Area

Designate a whole group area in your classroom where you will deliver whole group instruction, share and celebrate strategies, and have rich math discussions as a whole group. Consider these ideas when designing your whole group area: 1) The space is anchored by a rug, interactive board and/or white board. 2) Store teacher math manipulatives and whole group instructional tools in this area. 3) Store student math toolkits and math manipulatives close to this area so that they are easily accessible for students.  These tools should be in individual tool kits or organized and labeled in some sort of storage solution. 4) Assign learning spots on the rug so students have someone to turn and talk with. This will nurture collaboration in your classroom.

2. Math Focus Wall

Create a math focus wall near your whole group instruction area. Consider including the following items on your wall: 1) math word wall, 2) anchor charts and math posters, 3) calendar, 4) posters with accountable talk stems / math thinking stems / math talk, 5) hundred-twenty chart, 5) lesson objective(s) and essential question(s).

3. Small Group Area

Design a small group instruction area. This is where you can host your guided math groups. Keep math manipulatives, instructional tools, and resources nearby. Consider keeping copies of your classroom math posters in this area so you can pull them out as needed.

teacher showing student how to tell time

4. Real World Application

Emphasize the real world application of math concepts and skills, so students begin to develop an understanding of the purpose and importance of learning math. One way to do this is through reading children’s literature that has math concepts embedded in them. Display these books in your classroom before, during, and after reading them.

5. Independent Work Space

Find options in your classroom where students can work independently to problem solve. This includes ideas like student desks and sitting on the floor with clipboards.

6. Partner Work Space

Provide areas in your classroom where students can work with partners and small groups. This could involve the way you set up student desks, offering clipboards, or small group tables.

7. Number Line

Post a number line on the walls of your classroom. Position it so students can access it. This ideally means that students can touch it, so try to keep it low.

8. Math Language

Use and encourage math language. Do this by 1) posting thinking stems and modeling using them during think alouds, 2) regularly and naturally using math vocabulary, 3) hosting number talks at least three times per week, 4) and requiring students to explain and justify their thinking.

9. Growth Mindset

Promote having a growth mindset around math. The best way to do this is to embody it yourself. In addition to that, we can be sure to celebrate strategies, different ways of thinking, and small wins. Whether students are at the concrete, pictorial, or abstract stage of understanding a concept, it is important to celebrate where students are and where they are going.

10. Math Songs

Play math songs during transition times and snack.

10 Types of Math Posters You Need in Your Elementary Classroom

1. Math Concept Reference Charts

When teaching a new math unit or topic, it is helpful to introduce reference charts that support students with making sense of their learning. Post it in a place in your classroom where students can access them with ease. You could also make copies for each student and have them keep it in their math folder or binder. Another option is to keep them in a class binder that students can reference throughout the year as needed.

2. Math Tools

Think of your classroom as a big toolbox. Within that toolbox, you’ll want to include tools for students to access to support their learning. Some examples include a class number line, hundred or hundred-twenty chart, tens frame poster, and accountable talk stems.

3. Classroom Calendar

Establishing calendar time as part of your morning routine is a great way to add in extra math practice on a daily basis. Posting this resource also supports students in identifying the date, so they can write it at the top of their papers, as well as becoming more familiar with calendar concepts.

4. Guided Math Workshop Rotation Board

Growth mindset posters are a great tool for creating a classroom community that embodies both a positive attitude toward problem solving and a growth mindset in math. Some examples of growth mindset posters include, “Struggles make me stronger!” and “Math helps me build my problem solving skills!” These could be the most influential math posters you have in your classroom. Grab a set of growth mindset posters in my Elementary Math Resource Collection!

6. Classroom Expectations

Posting classroom expectations for math time is very important at the beginning of the year. Consider generating a list with the class, posting them in an area where students can see them, and refer to them as needed. This will help your math block run smoothly!

7. Math Strategy Anchor Charts

When teaching a new strategy to students, it’s helpful to create a model of the strategy that students can refer to as they work independently or with partners to solve the same type of problems.

8. Posters of Famous Mathematicians with Quotes

This is a great way to integrate history into your math instruction and it’s also great for helping students understand that math concepts were created/discovered by real people. An example is Albert Einstein who said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new”.

9. Humorous Math Classroom Posters

There are some really funny math jokes out there that your students will get a kick out of. One example is, “Why didn’t the two fours feel like dinner? Because they already eight.” When you have fun with math, your students will, too! These will likely be your students’ favorite math posters!

10. Inspirational Math Posters

Posting classroom posters with inspirational quotes like “Dreams + Work = Success!” and referring to them throughout the school year helps students internalize the ideas and feel more positively about math.

Math centers, also commonly referred to as math stations or math rotations, are a great way to offer fun and engaging learning experiences to elementary students during your math block. They fit neatly in the math workshop with guided math framework, but can be used without the implementation of that structure as well. Get tons of math center ideas below!

five math game pieces and set of dice

This blog post will answer the following questions:

  • What are math centers?
  • Why are math centers important?
  • What are the benefits of students playing math games during centers?
  • What are the benefits of assigning math games for homework?
  • How do I organize my math centers?
  • What is the best way to introduce a new math game to my class?
  • How do I hold my students accountable when they are playing math games during center time?
  • Do you have any classroom management strategies for math center time?
  • What are the best math board games, card games, and printable games for elementary students?

What are Math Centers?

Math centers, also commonly called math stations, are different places in your classroom where students are working independently, with partners, or a small group on a learning task. These learning experiences provide students with opportunities to practice previously-taught skills.

Math centers are a component of the Math Workshop with Guided Math framework. I created the acronym M.A.T.H. for my math centers when I was a third grade teacher. I go into great detail into this with my guided math workshop course (coming soon), but M stands for math facts. A stands for at your seat. T stands for teacher’s choice. H stands for hands-on. Using this math stations acronym for the names of my math work stations made setting up and running math stations very easy! The four types of math centers gave me the structure and flexibility I needed to maintain consistent procedures and routines while meeting the needs of each of my students.

math center games with cubes and dice

Why are Math Centers Important?

Math centers are important because they give students the opportunity to practice previously-taught skills in a fun and engaging way. This helps them maintain and deepen their understanding of grade level concepts or skills. It also provides learning experiences where they can work independently, with a partner or small group without teacher support. This promotes problem solving practice. It also gives the teacher the opportunity to meet with a small guided math group to meet students’ individual needs through differentiated instruction.

Benefits of Playing Games during Math Centers

There are so many benefits to students playing math games during math center time. I found that games fit perfectly within the H (hands-on) center of my guided math workshop framework. Playing math games during math stations is beneficial because they…

  • build math fluency.
  • deepen students’ number sense.
  • develop a love of math within students.
  • engage learners effectively.
  • provide opportunities to practice and apply concepts and skills.
  • encourage internalization of different strategies and their connectedness.
  • strengthen students’ understanding of numbers.
  • empower students to work autonomously.
  • give students the opportunity to practice communication skills.
  • can serve as a formative assessment.
  • allow teachers to pull a small group or work with students one-on-one.
  • lend themselves to differentiation.
  • provide students the opportunity to apply math talk in an authentic context.

5 Benefits Of Using Math Games As Homework

Math games are great for math work stations in the classroom, but they are also good for homework. Here are 5 reasons why math games are great for homework.

They…

  1. promote family engagement in math
  2. help reinforce concepts and skills
  3. build fluency
  4. improve students’ attitudes toward homework
  5. help develop a love of math within students

5 Math Center Classroom Management Challenges to be Prepared for and How to Overcome Them

Managing math centers can be challenging if you don’t have strong procedures and routines in place at the start of the school year. Read some common hiccups below, how to address them, and what you can do proactively to avoid them altogether.

1. Partners are arguing over who won or who is winning.

Response to Situation 1

  1. Start by giving the group a friendly reminder to use their problem solving skills.
  2. If the argument continues, then coach them through how to solve their problem while referring back to an anchor chart posted on the wall.
  3. If the argument persists, follow through on consequences.

Proactive Preparation for Situation 1

At the beginning of the year, explicitly teach a system of how to solve problems among friends and record the process on an anchor chart.  Post the anchor chart on a wall in the classroom.  In addition, ask your students when you are teaching a new game (or as needed) the following questions: 1) “Are we going to be upset when we don’t win?” 2) “Are we going to argue about who won and get upset?” and 3) “Does it matter who wins?” When doing this, encourage your students to respond collectively, “No!” after each question.

2. One partner is not using tools appropriately.

Response to Situation 2

  1. Start by reinforcing expectations by complimenting the student who is using tools appropriately.
  2. If the behavior continues, then review the expectations posted or projected on the wall with the child who is off task.  Identify consequences if behavior continues.
  3. If the behavior persists, follow through on consequences and invite the child who is on task to join a different group.

At the beginning of the year, explicitly teach how to use math tools appropriately and document your ideas on an anchor chart. Post the anchor chart on a wall in your classroom. In addition, ask your students when you are teaching a new game (or as needed) the following questions: 1) “Are we going to treat our tools like toys?” 2) “Are we going to use them this way (model inappropriate use)?” and 3) “How about this way (model another inappropriate use)?” When doing this, encourage your students to respond collectively, “No!” after each question.
