When she grew up, Eugenie decided to study zoology in college. Many people didn’t think women were smart or brave enough to go into science, but that didn’t stop Eugenie. She went on to make many discoveries about fish and sharks.

As she learned more about her favorite animal, Eugenie wanted people to see sharks the way she did. She decided to conduct an experiment where she would train sharks. She learned that not only could sharks be trained, they could remember what they learned for two months.

The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles tells the story of when 6 year-old Ruby Bridges and her family moved to New Orleans for a better life in 1960. Segregation was still rampant, and a judge ordered a handful of Black girls to begin going to White schools. Ruby was one of these children.

She was the only one to go to Franz Elementary School from these children. On her first day, a big mob stood outside and chanted with signs, protesting her going. No students went as well. Ruby continued to go, day after day, praying for God to forgive these angry people.

6. Read Aloud The Tree Lady

The Tree Lady by H. Joseph Hopkin is a biography of Katherine Olivia Sessions. It tells the story of how Kate became known as the Mother of Balboa Park, located in San Diego.

Kate grew up in Northern California and loved being in the woods under the trees. Unlike other girls at the time, Kate liked to get her hands dirty and study science. She even went to college to study science and was the first woman to graduate from that school.

After graduating, Kate moved to San Diego and became a teacher. San Diego was very different than anywhere Kate had lived before. There were no trees and it was a very dry landscape. After a few years of teaching, Kate decided to become a gardener. She made it her mission to bring trees to San Diego. Kate began collecting trees that could grow in San Diego. She wrote letters to gardeners around the world asking for seeds. Soon, there were trees all over San Diego and people were even planting them in their yards.

When a big exposition was coming to San Diego, it was decided the park, Balboa Park, needed more trees for shade. Kate worked to plant trees all over the park. People couldn’t believe the lush park that had been created.

The Iditarod Lesson Plans and Activities

Below are our favorite lesson plans and activities for teaching students about The Iditarod.

Read Aloud the Book, Akiak

Akiak by Robert J. Blake is a story about a dogsled team running in the Iditarod. Akiak is the oldest dog on Mack’s team. They have never won the race before, and now that Akiak is 10 years old, it is her last chance to win the race. She is the lead of her dog team because she knows the trails very well. When Mack’s team makes it to first place in the race, they must start running through deep snow. Akiak gets a lot of snow jammed in her paw and gets hurt. She can no longer run the race and her team must go on without her.

As a handler is trying to get Akiak into a helicopter, she breaks free and starts to run after her team. She runs for several days through the cold snow and storms. Several volunteers try to catch her while others cheer her on. Akiak finally catches her team when they are on the wrong trail. Thanks to her experience, Akiak is able to direct her team to the finish and help them complete the race.

Your students may not be familiar with Pi, but they definitely know what pie is! Celebrate March 14th with the fun and engaging Pi Day activities for elementary students below.

How to Celebrate Pi Day with Your Students

Below is our favorite way to celebrate Pi Day with your elementary students who haven’t learned about Pi yet.

1. Watch Videos about Pi

Below is a video created by PBS Kids that gives a quick overview of Pi. There are a bunch of other quality videos out there that you can share with your students too.

2. Read Aloud Pie Picture Books

One fun way to celebrate Pi Day with your elementary students is to read aloud picture books with pie in them.

Enemy Pie

Read aloud the picture book, Enemy Pie! The main character in this story has an enemy, and his name is Jeremy Ross. He is his enemy because he laughed at him when he struck him out at baseball, and he invited everyone to his trampoline party besides him. The boy goes to his dad about having an enemy, and his dad says that he has the perfect way to get rid of enemies, enemy pie. His dad says that the boy just has to spend the day with Jeremy.

The boy is hesitant at first, but ends up going to Jeremy’s house to ask if he can play. The boys spend the day together and discover that they have a lot in common, and enjoy spending time together. When the boy’s dad has them come in for dinner and serves them enemy pie, the boy panics and tells Jeremy to not eat it. The boys are officially no longer enemies, and have developed a great friendship.

Piggie Pie!

Read aloud the picture book, Piggie Pie, which tells the story of a grumpy witch named Gritch. One morning, Gritch wakes up and is very hungry so she decides to make her favorite meal, Piggie Pie. However, Gritch realizes she does not have the most important ingredient, pigs! She flies over to Old MacDonald’s farm in search of pigs for her lunch. When she gets there, she is not able to find any pigs. She asks the hens, cows, ducks and farmer and they all tell her no pigs are there. Little does Gritch know, the clever pigs disguised themselves as the other animals. Gritch is approached by a thin, sick looking wolf who explains that pigs are too hard to catch and tells Gritch how hungry he is. Gritch decides to invite the wolf to her house for lunch. Both head home imaging the delicious lunch they will have.

3. Bring in a Pie to Share with Your Students

Another popular way to celebrate pie day is to share a pie as a class. Be sure to check with your school’s policy about food. Also, check for whether or not your students have related-allergies.
